Geography

The markland runs from the mountains on the west to the sea on the east, resting northeast of the Agrandoran range. The north border is shared with Gondunura. Claims to the south extend to the edge of the Tanzold Forest.

History

Zemuk has only ever been unified by strong leaders. Only those unafraid to kill whoever gets in their way have ever been able to hold the title of Markgraf for any significant period.

Unfortunately, the Telman administrators in neighboring Gondunura tampered heavily with the intertribal politics of Zemuk, installing or deposing Markgrafs as it suited them. During the height of the Telman Empire, Zemuk was consistently treated poorly by the Telman administrators, who used their influence over the Markgraf selection "process" to draft large numbers of Zemuk's fighting men into the Telman legions, shipping them off to other lands to fight for the Empire.

When Telman influence began to wane in Rytacht, a wily and powerful Graf named Viktin deposed the Telman-backed Markgraf. Before the Gondunuran garrison could respond, Viktin had forged an army of vengeful Zemukers and marched on Gondunura himself. Viktin oversaw the complete destruction of the Telman garrison, brutally tortured and executed anyone who would not swear fealty to him, and then turned his army loose on the local Gondunuran people. The bloodletting and savagery did not stop for weeks, and when it was over Gondunura was a blasted ruin that needed a decade to recover. Relations between the two nations have never fully recovered.
